Nakkas Cistern is named after a fairly small shopping mall that sells carpets. It's quite easy to find, walk along Sultan Ahmet Square to the opposite end, the Hagia Sophia remains behind, and from the left corner of the square go down a little and to the left and you will see this shopping center, although many people just call it a store. Go through the doors and walk diagonally through the hall, to the far right corner and there is a descent to the bottom, into the tank itself. I must say right away that it is definitely worth visiting and exploring, it may not be very large, but it is worthy of attention, especially since it is of historical value as an object of cultural heritage of ancient Byzantium. The cistern is well lit and the light adds a little mystery to it, but of course it is also a kind of decoration and of course the decoration of the cisterns are the columns supporting the vault, here they are also very interesting and worth paying attention to. The cistern is also a demonstration hall, and here you can see models of the hippodrome, now Sultan Ahmet Square, the Bucoleon Palace, which is currently in ruins and some ancient ceramics, and information materials are posted on the walls, from which you can learn some historical facts and see the plans of the city and the placement of historical buildings in it. objects, as they stood in ancient times. I highly recommend you to visit, especially since Sultan Ahmet Square is always on the list of places to visit for all tourists, and it would be an unacceptable mistake not to visit the Nakkas tank. Enjoy the architecture of a bygone empire...
We found this cistern, thanks to the Rils. It's good that you can watch it for free and understand what kind of structures they are. The tank itself has models and signs with information about the nearby racetrack. The entrance is through a carpet store - we were lucky and no one tried to sell us anything at all. There is an inscription on the door that says that the entrance to the cistern is by appointment and only for the day - we passed quietly and no one told us anything either. There were a couple of people in the tank at that moment.
It's not a big tank. It's interesting inside! Added various exhibits inside! A cistern is a place where water supplies for the city were stored in ancient times! There are several such places in Istanbul, there are paid ones, there are free ones! This church was visited because of the proximity of the accommodation, there are free larger-scale ones. There are even more large-scale paid ones!
A wonderful, small cistern, without water, but renovated. Enough to understand how water was collected in Constantinople. The carpet shop upstairs is also worth your attention, a lot of interesting things, a very atmospheric place.
Impressive. They didn't get into the Basilica cistern - there was a huge queue. Here we got an idea of underground reservoirs for free and without waiting in line. Plus, there is an interesting exposition about the hippodrome square.
There is an announcement on the doors of the carpet store that you can book a visit to the cistern in one day, but there were few visitors, and they let us in right away.
Be sure to visit this secret place in Istanbul! Even if you come to this city for the first time, you will be impressed by the communication with sellers of gizmos with oriental flavor, Turkish tea and coffee from the friendly hosts.… They will certainly tell you their secret!
The case when, thanks to the reviews, I found a secret room.
An ancient cistern is hidden under the handmade carpet store of the same name. It's less than the paid ones, but it's not worse.
Come in, you will be greeted by the smiling owners and they will tell you the password "it is possible", do not forget to pet the local cat, which will take you to the basement and brighten up your leisure time. Inside you will be greeted by the history of the hippodrome, which was located parallel to the cistern. It is very informative and visual.
A great place and a recommendation to visit. No worse than the famous Basilica. Admission is free. Through the Nakkas carpet store.
There is a sign that you need to register a day in advance. But we were in rainy weather, we were asked, we were allowed in without an appointment. There was no one else but us.
The attraction is little known, but it was very pleasant to visit. A real cistern, restored by the owners of the carpet store. It turned out great and an atmospheric little museum to boot. I recommend
I came across it by accident. You need to go to a carpet store, go down the stairs and you get into another world. Even the air there is saturated with time. I knew that the four horses that I saw on the pediment of the Basilica of San Marco were brought from Constantinople, but I did not know where exactly. It turned out that this is exactly the place where they were before 1204.
I highly appreciate the entrance to the tank from this store, during the season by appointment, we passed without any problems, in February there are no people, admission is free. The museum view, posters with photos and diagrams of the racetrack, a couple of exhibits, it was very interesting to me. Make sure to schedule it. It is located near the hippodrome and the Malaya Sofia mosque, which I also really liked.
The tank was found according to the recommendations.
We went in without an appointment, there are not many people inside.
We got a general impression of this type of structures. I liked the exhibition of miniature sculptures.
An interesting place. One of the cisterns in Istanbul, but without queue and payment. It has a museum where there is a clear explanation of the Colosseum - columns in the center and so on. But according to the rules, you need to call and arrange at least a day in advance!
The entrance through the carpet store is very interesting. One of the bosses showed us around, gave us coffee, and was very kind (pictured).
Carpets of amazing quality, with different reflections from different sides and so on. The most delicate feeling when you touch it - lovers of it can buy anything.
You can also see how they are woven!
We got there based on reviews . The entrance is really free , although it says that you need to register a day in advance , but they let us in without an appointment ( probably because there weren 't many people yet )
The tank itself isn't very big, but it's still impressive!
It gives an idea of the structure of such tanks, there is a small museum. The employee in the store is Russian from above, she will be happy to tell the story.
We stopped by to visit the cistern, which we found when we were doing repairs at the mall. Entrance to the cistern is free. It is slightly complicated by the fact that you are persistently offered to buy a carpet and will be released only after a lengthy discussion on this topic.
A gorgeous archaeological site. It is very well decorated. But it is strangely organized - you have to go into the store and ask where the entrance is. It's a little difficult to detect on your own, there is no pointer. As a result, I had to consider carpets in a carpet store, although with the promise not to impose a purchase and then show the entrance to the Cistern. And so it turned out. They didn't regret it. We got a great aesthetic pleasure. In some places they write that you need to book a visit in advance. I don't know, we walked like that, and there were no other visitors.
I advise everyone to visit. The cistern is located under the Nakkash carpet store. 5 minutes from Sultanahmet Square and completely free! Just go into the store and in the far right corner there will be a ladder down into the cistern. Go through the store and go down, none of the store staff stops you. The cistern itself also houses a small but interesting exhibition dedicated to the history of the area.
The carpets were not looked at, the target was the NAKKASH cistern, located in the store of the same name, suitable as a free alternative to the miniature Basilica cistern.
Oh, another free delightful secret place without tourists! In the basement of the carpet store! I really liked it there. I recommend it to everyone! The tank is small, but it's interesting to see!
The entrance to the cistern is free, located in the right corner on the first floor of the shopping center. Carpet sellers will "pester" you...There is no pomp here, like in a Basilica, but you can visit it once.
A free cistern, for those who do not want to spend too much and understand what kind of structure it is. We liked it, this tank was enough, we decided that we would not go to the others for a fee.
Be sure to visit this place, especially for free)) Not a large cistern area, but still impressive as a historical object, atmospheric and mesmerizing silence. The descent to the Cistern is located in the Carpet store)
The Nakkas cistern, an excellent historical place, the hippodrome museum, is located in a carpet and tableware store made of quartz, the girl told about the dishes, she is from Kazan, it is very interesting. They work from 9 o'clock. The visit is free of charge
An alternative to the much more expensive more well-known Tanks. It is located next to Sultanahmet Square in the basement of a textile and carpet store. To our question, what should we just look at, but we won't buy anything, we politely conducted and turned on the lighting...Nothing was additionally imposed.
ps. Admission is free...(so far, probably 0
The store itself is not particularly interesting, BUT the tank in the basement of the store is top:
- free of charge
- no queue, BUT by appointment
- well, it's not a big exhibition in the store hall.
I recommend it!!! 👍🙂
Friends, while passing through Istanbul, I visited this store. It positions itself as an elite and as a representative of the absolute quality of everything that is sold in it, especially Turkish goods. We got there by accident, there was a museum marked on Google Mars. Yes, the museum is worth a look, it is not big and there are Cisterns in the hall and tells about the construction of the hippodrome of Constantinople.
But unfortunately, this is all that is wonderful.
From the threshold, you begin to be accompanied by "touts", who look very intelligent and unobtrusive. And after viewing the museum, they are invited to visit a ceramics store, supposedly of the highest quality and originality compared to the whole of Istanbul.
Impressed (it turns out I haven't been in the "insidious embrace" of salespeople for a long time) and you can say that I was moved, I made a purchase of a decanter, allegedly from some rare clay and unusual colors for "some $ 200", although it was originally $ 250 (unfortunately I was not alerted by such an "attraction of unheard-of generosity") and a dream, forgive the idiot, possession of an unusual form of a decanter bought in a place where you are guaranteed the best quality (again , loss of full orientation) , in Istanbul - IT CAME TRUE! Dear reader, he can say that he is an IDIOT himself - and he will be right.
Because I was "given" an obvious shabby product that can be bought for more modest bucks or maybe lira on every corner of beautiful Istanbul (and this is without sarcasm), all people starting from the hotel and the tour desk were extremely and optimally decent (well, if you don't notice the taxi drivers of the Airport-Wherever you Want but also this can be perceived as folklore 🤣) Which I do not want to put up with in relation to the employees of this .. either a shopping mall or a store ..toli selpo!
From the very first use under wine, and subsequent rinsing under cold water, after drying, bubbles appeared, followed by breaking and exposing "some very expensive clay", see photo
Friends, you have the right to laugh at me and my situation, and you laughed yourself, although I laughed so dearly only at concerts by M.M.Zhvanetsky. Not only do I warn you to enter into "oral and financial communication" with representatives of this food store, but I also approximate this situation to the rest of the goods presented there, and there are even jewelry made of precious metals and stones. Isn't it the same with this segment of the trade (as with rare ceramics)? A question? The risk is yours, friends.
A wonderful free tourist site next to Sultanahmet Square, which is very surprising, since there is a cistern 10 minutes away with an entrance fee of 350 liras))). The scale is impressive, considering that it was a reservoir. Inside there are stands with the history of the racetrack, the crumbling walls of which can be seen opposite the cistern. Definitely Yes to the visit)
This tank is small. But it's free and without a queue, if you run past the guard with a brick face. Inside is a mock-up of a racetrack and several exhibits.
I am an authority driver, there is a parking lot at the door, guest accommodation is a very high-quality business, my partners left very satisfied, they visited the cistern, bought very nice carpets, their treats are wonderful

An interesting place is located under the Nakkas carpet store, at the entrance they said that the recording was in advance, but no one was there and they let us through, after viewing the cistern they informed us about their local handmade tableware store and so on, I recommend visiting the places
A free tank with an exposition about the Racetrack in the carpet store. They don't cling at the entrance, most of them come precisely because of the tank. If you are in the area, be sure to take a look
Respect and respect to the owners of this store. They contain a small mini museum with an underground cistern. The facility is gorgeous, the smell of the dungeon is present. You can get in for free, given the price of 100 lira in the hyped tourist cisterns that are nearby. It's just great here!!! Gorgeous layouts and photos that make it clear what the hippodrome and the palace looked like from above.
Free and no less beautiful than the rest of the tank. At the entrance it says that you need to sign up for a day. But if there is no crowd, then they let you in without any problems. Inside there is a carpet and tableware store, and in the cistern itself the history of the racetrack, which is located almost above it, is described in detail.

In the Nakkas carpet store you will find one of the free Cisterns in Istanbul)) It is called the Nakkash Cistern, VI century.
The cistern is an ancient underground reservoir of Constantinople. The structure was designed to accumulate water, which was of strategic importance in the event of a siege of the city.
