When you arrive at 3AM, you'll have to wait until 5AM in the transfer zone! Before you can reach the departure lobby. In the zone with no seats and no personnel. They will just tell you, that the transit zone will open at 5!!!
I visited Shanghai Pudong International Airport and I want to share my impressions - maybe my review will be useful to other travelers.
The airport is really huge, modern and technologically advanced. There is a lot of space, light, clean and quite convenient to navigate if you understand in advance where you need to go. The staff is polite, but you should be prepared for the language barrier — not everyone knows English.
🛜 Wi-Fi:
Free Wi-Fi works fine, but to connect, you either need to enter a Chinese phone number or use special vending machines (look between exits 75 and 77). If you are passing through China and you do not have a local SIM card, this is a salvation.
Important: many familiar websites (Google, YouTube, Instagram, etc.) are blocked in China, so I recommend installing a VPN in advance.
, Life Hacks:
Take an adapter to Chinese outlets with you — not all charging stations are suitable for European plugs.
Maglev is just space! It will take you to the center of Shanghai in 7 minutes. Be sure to take a ride if you want to experience
If you have a long transfer, you can find special recreation areas and even showers. Everything is very decent in terms of service.
There are cafes and shops, but the prices are slightly higher than in the city — it's better to take something with you in advance if you don't want to overpay.
Overall, the airport left a pleasant impression — large, modern, with thoughtful logistics. The main thing is to be prepared for Chinese specifics: to study the nuances in advance, and then everything will go smoothly. I was satisfied 🌟
Shanghai Pudong Airport is grand. Everything is great-waiting rooms with comfortable large upholstered chairs, cafes with snacks, electric trains that will take you to the gate you need for boarding. Serious inspection of hand luggage.
There are many souvenir shops in the Dutifry area. Perfume is a full line of brands, you will not see such a variety in any other country, only here. It can be tested. A direct flight from Shanghai to St. Petersburg takes about 10 hours, everything is clean, drinks are constantly offered, food is served on board twice, an interesting detail. Water is removed from personal belongings during the inspection, but as soon as you leave the inspection area and enter the waiting room, you immediately see a vending machine with clean water for free In the photo, please, a vending machine- drinkwater!
It is a very large, beautiful and modern airport. Border control, screening, baggage check-in and collection are well organized. It takes 15-20 minutes to obtain a transit visa. A large variety of shops and cafes. There are several comfortable business halls with quite tasty food and a good selection of drinks. You can get to the city by metro, but it's 7 minutes faster and more interesting by high-speed Maglev Maglev train. It is impossible to get lost. The routing is perfectly organized. There are luggage storage facilities in the arrival and departure halls.
It's a giant airport, but it's intuitive. The signs are in English.
Comfortable waiting area, plenty of space. There are few usb sockets.
Lots of toilets. There are vending machines with free drinking water.
Attention! During the inspection, everyone's powerbank is checked. It will not be allowed to be transported and will be permanently withdrawn if the capacity is higher than allowed. You need to check your powerbank for compliance in advance.
A nice spacious airport with quite adequate prices for food and drinks. Lots of shops, seating. There are stations with drinking water, where you can collect it for free in your bottle.
There are several lounge rooms to choose from, where you can relax, eat and even take a shower during long flight connections. The only thing missing in the lounge was an armchair/sofa where you could sleep for an hour with your legs outstretched)
It's huge with several terminals, but very convenient. There are always places to relax and restaurants with delicious food. There are many business rooms, there is a shower (they give 3 towels, a toothbrush, slippers), there are massage chairs. They all cook dim sum and noodles. A good choice of alcohol,
An ordinary airport. There's nowhere to eat after covid. Just at Starbucks and there's some local nearby, that's it. Duty-free is not enough. There is no exchange, it is closed. In duty-free, you can pay with cards from two of our banks, as well as in cash in dollars and euros.
Take thermos cups and tea bags, coffee, sugar, and doshi with you, too. There are a large number of vending machines with hot and cold drinking water.
If you have a long transfer in winter, take warm clothes (the airport is not heated).
No one speaks Russian here, there are people in Dutik who understand a little English. I hope my review will be useful to someone. Have a nice trip, everyone!
I'm editing the review a year later. Nothing has changed.
It's gigantic, but the navigation is quite clear. You can go to the city by metro (line 2, green), on the Maglev (but it runs according to schedule). You can buy subway cards at the vending machine, preferably with coins or small banknotes.
The airport itself sells tourist SIM cards, different fares, and I saw a 7-10-day fare for 50 yuan.
Before customs control at the vending machine, you need to scan your passport and fingerprints (on your own, pick up the receipt that comes out), then fill out a form with a pen (take your pen, otherwise you won't be able to wait) and then go to passport control. There's a giant queue deftly sorted out by the staff, in general, the wait is ~ half an hour. (Or how lucky you are, depending on how many flights arrived at the same time).
In general, the airport itself is very beautiful, everything is clean, there are many rooms to tidy up. Standard toilet bowls
It's a good airport. Clean, few people, surprisingly, there are shops and cafes with restaurants. It is possible to eat not expensive and tasty. I was in transit to Chongqing from St. Petersburg. Good organization, almost no queues.
The airport is quite spacious, there are many shops.
There is free water in the cooler.
We ate at the Blue frog cafes, there is the same one near Disney and were surprised that it was cheaper at the Airport. We thought that the airport had the most cosmic price tag, but no. Pretty acceptable.
A gorgeous, huge, high-tech airport! There are a lot of people, but everything is clear and there are no big queues. There is drinking water everywhere, free of charge, and smoking rooms. The business halls also have everything.
The airport impresses with its scale, but at the same time everything is perfectly organized, the service is fast, clean, spacious, everything is clear, the business lounge is excellent. The inspection was of course very thorough, but I had to leave the Power Bank for 30,000 (((. The queues for VAT refunds (tax-free) pass quickly.
This is not an airport, this is a spaceport for interplanetary aircraft!
Wow place. Design, infrastructure, accessibility of everything! You can have lunch here for 500-700rubles with our money. Lots of cafes, restaurants, shops.
A separate delight for military posts with representatives of the Chinese army.
The hammer and sickle in the center of the cosmodrome makes any Russian-speaking passenger smile.
Super airport, huge, our Sheremetyevo airport is childish compared to it, the organization of all processes is at a height. Passport control is probably half as fast as Sheremetyevo Airport. Again, cold water for drinking or hot, for tea or Doshirak, absolutely free, come and look for some water or boiling water.
And by the way, you don't need to take off your shoes and take off your belt, like we do, but they check all the electrical devices, like a Power bank, my wife has a portable irrigator, in general, all the boxes, like electronics or electrics.
Of course, it cannot be compared with Beijing in beauty, but there are more dutifrey shops and eating places. The staff is quite friendly. The issue of a transit visa was resolved quickly and without difficulties. If you have connecting flights with a break of 12 hours, book a hotel at the airport and you will be given a one-day visa at customs control so that you can get your suitcases and wait for the next flight. And from the windows of the hotel you will watch the planes rising up!
A great modern airport with everything! It is very convenient, comfortable, and to sit and have a snack, and there is a hotel to spend the night if there is a long break between flights...
The security check and quick passport control are very well organized. But the main pleasant surprise is that in the departure area (after passport control) there are free (!) coolers with hot and cold water. I haven't seen this anywhere. But the vaunted duty free zone is like everywhere else (prices are 1.5-2 times higher than in the city).
I docked here 4 times. The airport is quite large and consists of 2 terminals. Plan to dock here for at least 3 hours, since the airfield is large and airplanes ride around the airfield for 30 minutes. The processes inside the airport are not fully debugged. In particular, there is always confusion about which forms need to be filled out for entry with or without a visa. Because of the confusion with this, we were incorrectly denied entry, and then border guards searched for us in Shanghai to return to the airport and re-register our entry correctly. Everything was friendly and apologetic, but a lot of time was wasted. Unsmiling staff at passport control. But in May 2025, the passport control procedure improved compared to 2023, and there is no need to queue for a long time. There is a luggage storage at the airport, but an employee works there from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. At night, you can call a special number to have your luggage checked out. There are several business lounges. In general, they have a slightly official appearance, but here you can have a nice snack and relax. You can get from the airport to the city either by high-speed Maglev or by metro.
If you are flying with a transfer at night, then be prepared that nothing from the word works at the airport at all. There are few places where you can sit down to relax, wait for the start of registration. People all sleep on the floor, some on suitcases, and some even took mattresses and blankets with them.
The local staff did not understand English and did not understand each other well through the translator either.
We had difficulty finding a hotel for the night, but we found it 4 hours after arrival.
A day at the hotel will cost 7500r for 2
We arrived and were told to pick up our suitcases, as they could not let us into the transit area at night.
You can also run into people who offered to take us to some hotel to spend the night.
The hotel accepts payment only by card or cash, local currency. You mean that you won't be able to exchange money at night.
Apple Pay is not working.
Among the advantages: clean restrooms and free hot/cold water.
You can take a doshik with you on a plate and have a snack, drink tea / coffee.
There is a smoking area.
All the staff were friendly and helpful. It is clear that people sincerely wanted to help, but unfortunately could not.
The transit area was great.
Everything is working, apple pay is working. There are plenty of places to relax, and there is a smoking area.
Lighters are being taken away, it's better not to take them with you.
There is a public lighter in the smoking area.
A large, spacious airport, there are places to lie down and lots of outlets, delicious Starbucks coffee, and overall a great airport with domestic trains between terminals
It's a great airport, and there are even coolers with free water. Clear gates, but really not very comfortable chairs with handles. Otherwise, it's clean. I would like to add recreation areas like in Istanbul
The airport is convenient. The staff speaks English (which is quite rare in China). Emigration control takes place quite quickly
But it is better to look in advance at what documents need to be processed on arrival, the form for transit and for a visit on a visa + are similar and you can get confused.
It is a very large but convenient airport to navigate. There are plenty of places to eat, and free drinking water, toilets are also free. Everything is clean and well maintained.
But there are long queues for control.
I flew for a week in early November, back and forth. It's already good that you can not dress in the clothes of the Moscow autumn, as in a Balloon with buses, but go to the building through the passage.
The airport is more functional than entertaining, and it's a good thing that I didn't have to run too much in advance to think about how to kill this time. All sorts of "VIP" gadgets used to lure banks to Sheremetyevo are useless here. There is even no online registration, although we flew back on the same Aeroflot.
Automatic fingerprint self-registration machines are not clear upon arrival (in China, all fingers are recorded). That is, they will remove the same thing further, standing in line. In general, there is little information and we are looking at those who have already been here.. or not. Long corridors without travelators.
You can get to the city by high-speed train, etc. I had a bus.
Most of all, I was touched by the staff who tried to help as much as possible. Probably, many people have gone through the story of lighters on departure. It's useless to hide them - don't take your favorite lighters with you to China. They even helped me find this ill-fated lighter in my bag and then re-check my luggage faster (our boorish "VIPs" did not let me in without queuing, but the Chinese employee personally took my hand and led me to the check-in desk)
From the 2nd floor of the departure hall, there is a panoramic view of the take-off and landing strips against the background of the bay, into which ships exit the river. That's it, we'll wait an hour..
Everything is very convenient and clear. Everything is clean and tidy. There is a cooler with boiling water. The main thing is to read more about the terminals in advance if you are planning a transfer. But there is a very long border control.
Compared to the Beijing airport, it's just fire, I flew from Bangkok with a transfer to another terminal on s7, the time between flights is 4.5 hours, (remembering the Beijing airport, I printed out everything that was written a couple of texts through a translator in Chinese, in short, I prepared for the worst) but after looking down for 10 minutes, walking from one counter to another, they quickly decided that I needed to be given a temporary visa, left the terminal , went up to the second floor and went to the second terminal without going outside, there was another check-in , by the way, they check it for a long time..and everything was in the waiting room, since the flight was late, there was only one cafe, but I took some kind of set for 100 yuan and was satisfied)
It's a good airport. A good hub for traveling to Asia. Not a bad duty free. There are many shops and cafes. Everything was on time. Intuitive navigation. Quiet and rizonal inspection.
Huge airport, clean, tidy, drinking water. The transit zone was pleased with the places where you can take a nap, but disappointed with the lack of choice of cafes and shops.
It's a giant airport, but it's also quite comfortable and understandable. Transportation is well organized - there is a metro and you can get directly to the city center without a transfer.
A very large airport, even too much. In the redistricting of one terminal, you need to travel by train between different exits. All the benches have hard handrails, you won't be able to sleep. Prices in souvenir shops are inflated almost 10 times, for example, a can of green tea costs 130 yuan. A business lounge near Exit 135 is priced at 300 yuan for 2 hours, but the time is not controlled. You can sleep, have beer, wine, whiskey, and some food. To the city of Maglev + metro for 85 yuan or just take the subway for 40 minutes longer.
A huge transshipment Hub, a very beautiful and modern airport in Shanghai. I was in transit to Bali. I was very surprised by the size of the airport, waiting areas and gates. There are a lot of areas with drinking water and boiling water. There are even places where you can lie down and there is a lot of space. Charging for bodies is everywhere. There are a lot of different cafes and shops with prices in rubles.
Modern airport, well-organized space, huge underground parking. There is really a lot of space in all areas of the terminal. Architecture is modern minimalism, Hindus are more risky in architectural terms.
A good modern airport. It is better to go to the city by high-speed Maglev train. The train takes 7-8 minutes.
The cost is 80 yuan round trip.
Convenient if you want to see the city.
There is a place to eat and change money at the airport itself. The exchange fee is 36-40 yuan.
Strangely enough, the airport is spacious, there are people crowding and there is no excitement. Everything is clean, the bathrooms are generally above praise. If there is a container, you can get enough drinking water to fill it.
An excellent, new, modern airport. There are a lot of places to relax in the waiting rooms with tables and chargers. The water is cold and hot in every room, the toilets and seats are very clean, even heated. I was surprised by the airport with its size and level of service and a very cozy, friendly atmosphere👍
It is difficult, using only normative vocabulary, to express the degree of my amazement and disappointment at visiting this facility.… We were flying from Phuket with a transfer in Shanghai. We landed at about 23 hours and it turned out that after 00:00 the airport "turns into a pumpkin"... check-in for the next flight opened only at 06:30 and before that time it is impossible to hand over the luggage, and to the transit zone, respectively, too (here is just a statement of fact, without indignation).
At that moment, it turned out that with the huge size of the building, there were catastrophically fewer seats than the number of passengers waiting for the flight.
Cafes, currency exchanges, shops, nothing is working! At all!
To find a place to sit down properly, I had to run around the terminal with heavy suitcases, since all the seats are occupied, and tired people even sleep on the floor. The business lounge is closed until morning.
In general, for all the scale of this airport, at night it looks more like a cyberpunk ghetto.
All this nonsense has negated any advantages of this airport for me. I hope I never find myself there at night again.
It's a big, beautiful airport. According to the signs, everything is clear where to move. There is a subway between the terminals, so it is better to study the routes of movement around the airport in advance, especially if there is a short transfer.
We took the bus from the hotel for free. Naturally, the driver did not speak Russian or English. He stopped, and we got out. As it turned out later, it was a terminal for domestic flights, and we had to go to the international airport next. We walked very quickly from one terminal to another, fortunately we arrived in advance, but we managed everything) the airport is big, so be careful, We bought perfumes from several world brands and foreign sweets with our daughter. I liked everything
It is a very convenient airport even if you do not know Chinese. It is worth looking around a little, studying the signs and you can move around quite intuitively. There are many places for convenient waiting, sockets for charging gadgets. What is very pleasing is that, unlike Russian airports, water, some snacks cost the same as in any store in the city, without an airport surcharge. Some souvenirs are even cheaper than in Shanghai. There are devices with hot water everywhere absolutely free of charge. Clean toilets with paper towels. The only disadvantage for tourists is that if you do not have a connected Chinese SIM card, it is difficult to connect to wi-fi, you need to enter a code, well, or I just did not have time to figure it out, the mobile Internet is quite good. The security area is very thorough. You will be asked to get out of your backpack, a power bank, a smartphone, a laptop, containers, thermoses. Lighters and mercury thermometers will be taken away. Prepare for this in advance. Customs control is automated, it is necessary to attach the passport to the reading window, then scan the face and fingers. And you can eat at the airport without being ripped off with a double price tag, and in general the airport is for people, not for commercial structures.
From the useful:
- Do not put the Powerbank in your luggage, but take it out in advance during the inspection and put it in the basket.
- Business hall No. 9 is not the best. I can't compare it at this airport yet (there's a lot of choice), but once we got there, we were upset. The food is poor, the children have nothing to offer except yogurt and boiled eggs with tomatoes.
The rest is impressive in size and scope.
A very huge, very modern airport, there is a subway running between different gates, in general, a very huge airport, but nothing works at night, surprisingly for everyone. Cakes and food are only opened in the morning.
It is very large, but comfortable, understandable, and I was surprised that there are coolers with drinking water (hot/cold) all over the airport. There aren't a lot of cafes, but there are places.
It is convenient, the staff is the most adequate and prompt. The building is a bit old, but everything is very convenient. They arrived and left, and there was always a feeling that it happened very quickly, even despite the flight delay due to weather conditions. And in general, Shanghai is the most European and understandable city for Russians!
In general, count on the time that you will stand for about one and a half to two hours in queues for passport registration, fingerprint scanning, and transit paperwork, even if you are just flying in transit, the staff is quite impolite, it feels like the people working at the airport are busy just so that you don't queue in his direction, constantly they want to send you to another queue, and so on in a circle, it takes hours. The airport is huge, there are a lot of terminals and moving from one boarding gate to another exit takes most of the time, count on a few hours of transfer so it will be safer.
An ordinary airport. Relatively small. There are pros and cons to this. One of the advantages is that there is no need to wind kilometers on foot going through registration, passport control, shops, etc. Speaking of stores. Duty free is pretty good here. A small selection of alcohol, not only imported, but also local, is presented very modestly, and what is from Chinese is very expensive. There are shops with souvenirs, pandas, teas, etc. But the price tag is not humane at all, so it's better to buy souvenirs BEFORE the airport. In general, a normal airport, but nothing more.
Do not put the paper banks in the luggage, they will force you to take them out of the suitcase. And if the bank has no logos (erased or something else) then they won't let him through at all, they'll make him pass. Keep this in mind. You will also have to say goodbye to lighters, if anything, do not take some kind of dear lighter with you.))
A huge airport, convenient waiting areas, there are vending machines with water everywhere, there are lighters in the smoking room. The only drawback is that there are not enough outlets in the waiting area before check-in
I liked the airport. It is very large and bright. Vending machines with cold and hot water (you can brew doshirak, take tea with you). I was in the afternoon so everything worked, but the prices...burger - 98 yuan. There are vending machines where you can get a password from WiFi (next to the smoking room). There is a smoking room (unlike Beijing Airport). The biggest disadvantage is that there are no currency exchangers.
Passport control worked quickly, on 04/20/2024, at a 9-hour transfer, they were released into the city. Take a pen with you if you want to go out into the city, because 3 or 4 pens were written on the racks of 20 pens. People were queuing for a pen to fill out the exit form.
