A very poignant and very scary monument. I can only compare it with the Khatyn Memorial in Belarus. What could be quieter than a village? But how scary it is when this village is dead! What could be cuter than small children's shoes, in the fashion of the 40s, but there are no children's feet who wore these shoes! There are men's, women's, and children's shoes on the edge of the concrete embankment. The people who wore them, men, women, the elderly, and children, were brutally murdered. And the shoes are... By the way, just two blocks from the Shoes there is another wonderful memorial - the Hungarian Victory in World War II. But not everyone remembers now that Hungary was an ally of Germany. Therefore, in front of the Victory Memorial, another national memorial was created in memory of the tortured citizens. These monuments are a MUST-see!!!
The monument, shoes on the Danube embankment, is dedicated in memory of the dead, rather executed Jews, who were chained and shot, forced to take off their shoes before execution .., touches to the depths of the soul, and the sight of these shoes, children's sandals, women's shoes, behind which you involuntarily see people and their suffering 🙏🙏🙏 and the view of the Danube, which is beautiful, and the Parliament building, which are right next to it, and the panorama of the city.. The very contrast of beauty and horror in one place! Vital 🫶🙏
The history of this place where fascists killed people is deplorable and tragic. The idea of such a monument is ingenious. But the sculptor often uses samples of later shoe samples from the 90s and this is an anachronism. But if you are not a very observant person, you will not notice the inconsistencies.
