Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Old Town of Rhodes impresses with its size. Surrounded by a powerful stone wall, as well as a moat, it still looks impregnable in our time. The city is well preserved, it is interesting to walk around its territory; if desired, visit the museum exhibitions. Through the sea gate, you should go out to the harbor, admire the blue of the Aegean Sea and moored ships, stroll along the fortress walls to the sculpture with dolphins.

I was on the island in early June. Rhodes was greeted by a strong and cold wind, very strong. Especially in the port. He entered the city through the first Sea Gate he came across. I got to the square with a fountain, around some taverns, shops, barkers invite me to sit in their establishment. Intuitively, I walked down the street towards the clock tower. For 5 euros, you could climb it and look at the city from above. It's not very comfortable in this wind. I advise you to visit the library of Hafiz Ahmed Pasha and the Palace of the Grand Masters. The ticket only to the palace is 6 euros, you can take a more expensive ticket to several museums at once. I had only 6 hours to visit Rhodes, so I limited myself to one palace. I spent 40 minutes exploring the palace, of course, everything is running, there are many halls, and time is limited. I liked it, it was interesting. The city has winding, confusing streets, especially when you step off the main hiking trail. The navigator didn't help. I had to get lost. The walls of the fortress are grandiose, it was not at all easy to get inside through such defensive structures. You pass through a bridge, through a gate and get into a stone bag, then again a bridge over a moat and a smaller gate. Then again the moat walls, gates, and only then you get into the city. Now everything is designed for tourists, cafes, shops, souvenirs. The prices are reasonable. A lot of children play instruments and ask for money for the game or just ask. There is a gypsy camp in the city park next to the fortress, food is cooked right in the park, laundry is washed, there is a toilet and it is right at the fortress walls. The beggar children are probably from this camp. The fortress is very interesting, but probably for once. There is no desire to return there yet .

I'll be back!!! It is shady (the heat does not bother), the pier, the beaches are close. It's delicious in the cafe, souvenirs at pleasant prices (I bought a T-shirt with cats, a towel with donkeys and spices),,, in general I love fortresses and this one has joined the list. I didn't look at everything, I wasn't satisfied (I ran to the city in Zara), which is true, in these days it's forgivable,)

The fortress is interesting both as a historical object, as a museum and as just a place for pleasant walks! There are many wonderful, small cafes with excellent cuisine!

In the knight's fortress, namely in the Old Town of Rhodes, free electric cars began to run. If you are tired or have problems with your legs, even if you just decided to take a ride inside the old town, then the local municipality offers you free mini-cars that are driven by a driver. Routes on a separate map. Use it.

The history of the Rhodes Fortress is stunning in its beauty and tragedy. In 1306, the Genoese ruler sold Rhodes to the Order of the Knights of St. John. The inhabitants of the city and the Byzantine garrison resisted for 3 years, but were forced to submit. The Order of Knights arose at the beginning of the XII century. During the reign of the Knights, Rhodes experienced a period of prosperity. The architectural monuments of that time have been preserved to this day. Rhodes acquired the appearance of a medieval city as a result of construction, reconstruction and fortifications. From the inside, the wall divides the city into two parts, Collakio and Hora. In the first part there is the street of Knights, the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Cathedral, the hospital, the Knights' houses and the arsenal. In the second part of the city there are houses of residents of all nationalities, Orthodox and Catholic churches, barracks. The fortress walls are impressive with powerful towers, 4 km long and double moats. The towers are named after Spain, the Virgin, St. Paul, St. Nicholas. A magical journey through time in the past centuries! The design and ideas of construction, architectural solutions, and the talent of the masters of the medieval era are impressive. The Palace of the Grand Masters was not only a residence, but also an important fortification. The palace was built in the XIV century. In 1522, Rhodes was captured by the Turkish hordes and the history of Turkish rule began.
