A very unusual structure, well, not at all a lighthouse in the usual view! It is made in the shape of a cross when viewed from above, the area is very large, as well as the height of the structure, you can spend a lot of time both inside and outside. Interesting! The fact that Columbus, whom we all know, was buried here, is confirmed only by the POPE's encyclical, which is not confirmed by anything else! Near the building, the car in which the Pope visited Latin American countries, the entrance to the lighthouse is lined with slabs with quotes from famous travelers and navigators, inside there is a museum (free admission as far as I remember) with exhibits from different countries (including Russia), continents and travelers (a mock-up of Columbus's ship, armor, finds..) in In general, it is interesting, moderately tedious, informative and a must-visit in Santo Domingo ✅ I say YES ☝️🙌
The lighthouse on the Caribbean coast in the capital of the Dominican Republic is a tribute to the memory of the great Christopher Columbus, one of the most interesting sights of the country. The Columbus Lighthouse is both a large concrete mausoleum containing a sarcophagus with the ashes of the great navigator, and a museum with a rather interesting exposition. This monumental monument in Santo Domingo was inaugurated and consecrated by Pope John Paul II himself on October 12, 1992, to mark the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. The Pope's means of transportation around the island - the papamobile - also remained near the mausoleum as an exhibit.
I give 5 stars and highly recommend visiting the Columbus Lighthouse, there really is something to look at and learn.
We visited a curious object as part of a trip to Santo Domingo, but you shouldn't go there on purpose, there's nothing to do there for more than twenty minutes, I don't recommend moving freely around the territory, meetings with Haitian marginals are possible)). 🤷♀️
The Columbus Lighthouse in the Dominican Republic, or Faro a Colon, is an impressive mausoleum building where, according to legend, the ashes of the great traveler are kept. The lighthouse is especially beautiful at night, when 150 searchlights are directed into the sky from its roof, forming a huge cross (this happens, however, only on big holidays).
The Columbus Lighthouse is located in the capital of the state, the city of Santo Domingo. The construction of the structure took 7 years (the period from 1986 to 1992), and the cost of the work reached a record amount of $ 70 million! Many countries participated in financing the construction of the lighthouse, so in the middle of the construction, pavilions dedicated to all sponsor countries were opened.
Externally, the huge concrete building in the form of a cross looks unassuming and even gloomy – lovers of architectural masterpieces are unlikely to be delighted with what they see. However, its internal collection with the most important exhibit – the sarcophagus of the great traveler, as well as the history associated with the appearance of the ashes of Christopher Columbus on these lands is much more interesting for tourists.
The great traveler died in 1506 in Spain, and before that he asked to bury his remains on the island of Hispaniola (as Haiti used to be called). 34 years after his death, the admiral's relatives sent his ashes to Santo Domingo, where a new cathedral was being built (this trip is called the symbolic fifth and last voyage of Columbus to the New World). Later, due to the unstable political situation, the ashes were transported to Cuba and back to the Dominican Republic, and they were discovered in 1877 during the renovation of the cathedral.
The opening of the Columbus Lighthouse was timed to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, Pope John Paul II came to the ceremony (as a gift, he left his famous papamobile here, which is part of the exposition).
Scientists still doubt whether the remains stored in the Lighthouse really belong to the great Columbus, but this landmark is today one of the most visited in the Dominican Republic.
Almost every time I come to the Dominican Republic, I come to the Columbus Lighthouse. The only thing that I haven't seen yet is how the lighthouse looks late at night and at night - I think it will be a very beautiful sight.

Historical places. If you are in the Dominican Republic, be sure to visit this Lighthouse. There is a museum on the Caribbean coast, which is interesting and exciting. I recommend.
The lighthouse, the museum and the tomb of the most famous navigator. The monumental structure is made in the form of a cross with the grave of Christopher Columbus in the center. The museum expositions of most countries of the world are located in the rooms along the central corridor.
A masterpiece of modern architecture. The top is made in the shape of a Catholic cross..It should glow at night..in fact, it is turned on on big holidays.
