The main deity of this 11th century temple is Lord Lokanath in the form of a lingam. According to the story, the lingam in this temple was installed by Lord Rama. When Lord Rama, on his way to Sri Lanka in search of Sita, reached Puri and sat down with a vow to see Shiva here.
Lokanath Temple consists of four parts: Vimana, Jagamohana, Natamandapa and Bhogamandapa.
To the left of the courtyard is a small temple containing images of Surya Narayana and Chandra Narayana. The Satya Narayan Temple on the territory preserves images of Vishnu, Lakshmi.
In a number of festivals, including Chandan Yatra, Sital Sasthi and Shivaratri, Loknath is associated with Jagannath.
The temple has experienced many ups and downs throughout its history, but it has always been a place of worship for the people of Orissa.
